Wiesel 1 - Mobile Weapon Platform

The complicated and long-termed development history of the airborne weapon carrier Wiesel 1 started in 1969 and lasted until the first series-production vehicles were handed over to the Bundeswehr in 1990. Since then the unique design Wiesel 1 is an outstanding success. This publication describes the development history, variants and national as well as international use of the Wiesel 1 in great detail, thus closing a vital gap in modern German Army vehicle history.

Panzertruppe 2010 - German Panzer Forces in the 21st Century

The army of the German Armed Forces currently undergoes a transformation called "Neues Heer 2010", the ‘New Army 2010'. The Panzertruppe (armoured corps) of the Bundeswehr (modern German army) is thus in the midst of a tremendous reorganization when compared to the structure during its creation in the mid-1950s, the later Cold War years and even after the German Reunification of the mid-1990s. Aside from the largest force-reduction ever carried out in the past years, the Leopard 2A4 that created the core and backbone of the Panzertruppe in the past thirty years was stricken from active service in late 2008. Thus, today only the Leopard 2A5, 2A6 and 2A6M remain in service. The written part of this publication gives a brief history of the Bundeswehr Panzertruppe, the new organisation under ‘New Army 2010' and highlights the service record of the tank battalions still in existence. The pictorial part shows the last years of the Leopard 2A4 in active service and, most importantly, the motor pool of the ‘Panzertruppe 2010' that will make up the core of a new army for the years to come.

Panzertruppe 2010 - Die Panzertruppe der Bundeswehr im 21. Jahrhundert

Das Heer der Bundeswehr befindet sich derzeit in der Umgliederung zur Struktur „Neues Heer 2010". Die Panzertruppe der Bundeswehr befindet sich somit enorm im Wandel begriffen und ist im Vergleich mit ihrer Gliederung und ihrem Umfang der Anfangsjahre, der Jahre des Kalten Krieges und sogar den Jahren kurz nach der Wende kaum mehr wiederzuerkennen. Wichtigster Einschnitt ist, neben der Verkleinerung auf eine bisher nie dagewesene Größe, der Abschied des Leopard 2A4 aus dem aktiven Dienst Ende 2008. Somit befinden sich derzeit nur noch der Leopard 2A5, 2A6 und 2A6M im Dienst.
In dieser Publikation werden im Textteil kurz die Geschichte der Panzertruppe von 1956 bis zur Einnahme der neuen Struktur, die Bataillonsgliederung der Panzertruppe „Neues Heer 2010" sowie Kurzchroniken der heute noch im Dienst befindlichen Panzerbataillone vorgestellt. Der Bildteil bietet einen Rückblick auf die letzten Einsatzjahre des Leopard 2A4, Schwerpunkt ist aber die „Panzertruppe 2010" mit ihrer Fahrzeugausstattung Rad und Kette.

Panzerhaubitzen der Bundeswehr M7-M52-M44-M55-M109
Modern German Armoured Self-Propelled Howitzers

In the 1950s and 1960s the German Artillery was dominated by Panzerhaubitzen of U.S. origin: The M 7 B2, M 52, M 44, M 55 and finally, from 1964, by the M 109. While the earlier U.S. vehicles were taken over with only minor modifications the M 109 was given cutting-edge technology upgrades from the very first day. With the last M 109 stricken from active service, an era came to an end in 2007. This publication shows the German Panzerhaubitzen from the M 7 to the M 109 A3 GE A2 in excerpts from the original U.S. techncial manuals, with many hitherto unpublished photographs and comprehensive written documentation.

Das Waffensystem Panzerhaubitze stellte von der Gründung der Bundeswehr an das Rückgrat der deutschen Artillerie. In den 1950er und 1960er Jahren dominierten noch die U.S. Systeme wie M 7 B2, M 52, M 44 und M 55, die mit mehr oder weniger geringen Modifikationen übernommen wurden. Bereits mit der Einführung der M 109 im Jahre 1964 änderte sich dies jedoch, und deutsche Wehrtechnologie floss in die Modernisierungen mit ein, was schließlich in der M 109 A3 GE A2 gipfelte. Mit der Außerdienststellung der letzten M 109 im Jahre 2007 endete eine Ära. Diese Publikation zeigt alle Panzerhaubitzen von der M 7 bis zur M 109 A3 GE A2 in Auszügen aus technischen Dienstvorschriften, in zahlreichen bisher unveröffentlichten Fotos und mit ausführlicher Textdokumentation.

The development of the Follow-On Generation of trucks for the Bundeswehr was a unique event. It was only possible in the Cold War period with its outstanding demands. A lot of money and workforce was invested in the project. The ingenuity of a whole generation of German truck designers was employed and stretched to its limits. The final result was a generation of trucks that would be ahead of its time and serve as the foundation on which future army trucks would be built. This publication describes the complete development process and the technical details of the trucks in unprecedented detail. It then continues with the series-production vehicles, 5-tonne, 7-tonne and 10-tonne and their variants with many hitherto unpublished photographs supported by graphics and scale drawings. A special chapter is devoted to the MSA add-on armour system.

Die Entwicklung der LKW-Folgegeneration für die Bundeswehr ist eine einmalige Geschichte. Sie war wohl nur im Kalten Krieg möglich, in der sie stattfand. Es wurde sehr viel Zeit und Geld investiert und die Genialität des Ingenieurwesens des nahezu gesamten deutschen LKW-produzierenden Gewerbes eingebunden. Die Entwicklung der Fahrzeuge war am Ende richtungweisend und ihrer Zeit voraus. Vorliegende Publikation beschreibt detailliert den gesamten technischen Entstehungprozess in Wort und Bild, und stellt dann die drei eingeführten Fahrzeugklassen 5 t, mil, gl, 7 t, mil, gl und 10 t, mil, gl mit den unterschiedlichen Varianten dar. Die Bildauswahl wird hier von Grafiken und Maßstabszeichnungen unterstützt. Ein gesondertes Kapitel widmet sich der Modularen Schutzausstattung MSA.

Panzerkampf im Kalten Krieg
German Armoured Corps in Cold War Exercise Schneller Wechsel `74

This publication covers one of the most interesting modern German Army exercises held during the Cold War. Exercise Schneller Wechsel (Rapid Change) took place in the autumn of 1974 as a III Corps exercise. The name was chosen due to the relocation and repositioning of major units over long distances, often over hundreds of kilometres, on road marches and by railroad transport. Included were the crossing of various rivers using engineer bridges with most crossings carried out at night and were followed by immediate engagements. Road marches were covered with scenarios such as heavy losses and rapid deployment of maintenance and repair troops airlifted in. Airborne units supported the andvance as were units of the U.S. Army. A specific aspect of Schneller Wechsel '74 was its sheer size and magnitude, today unbelievable and undoable. Participating tank battalions and armoured reconnaissance battalions were often 600 vehicles strong! Also of interest are the various generations of MBTs such as the ageing M 48 A2C or the then brand-new Leopard 1 MBT, often fighting side by side.

Diese Publikation behandelt eine der interessantesten Heeresübungen der Bundeswehr: „Schneller Wechsel ´74". Der Name war treffend für die Übung, die durch weiträumige Verlegungen von Großverbänden über hunderte von Kilometern, Straßenmärsche und Eisenbahntransporte gekennzeichnet war. Dabei wurden verschiedene Gewässer mittels Kriegsbrücken und größtenteils nachts überwunden, um dann aus der Marschbewegung heraus zum Kampf anzutreten. Straßenmärsche waren gespickt mit verschiedenen Übungseinlagen wie starke Materialausfälle und dem schnellen Einsatz von Instandsetzungstrupps. Luftlandeeinheiten unterstützten das Gefecht genauso wie Einheiten der U.S. Army. Um aus heutiger Sicht einen Vergleich zu haben: Die einzelnen Panzer- und Panzeraufklärungsbataillone standen teilweise mit je 600 Kampfpanzern im Manövergelände! Interessant ist auch die unterschiedliche Materialausstattung beim Waffensystem Kampfpanzer mit dem alternden KPz M 48 A2C und dem neuen KPz Leopard 1, die oft Seite an Seite kämpften.

Modern German Army Rocket Artillery
HONEST JOHN - SERGEANT - LANCE - LARS 1

In the weapons arsenal of the Bundeswehr of the Cold War tactical ground-to-ground rocket systems played a key role to fulfil the demanded tasks within NATO both in conventional and nuclear battle scenarios. In the early years of the Bundeswehr the military rockets were exclusively of American origin, with the systems Honest John, Sergeant and Lance being actively deployed. Back then the US Army did not possess any multiple-launch rocket systems, and it was more focused on the development of heavy rocket artillery weapon systems that could launch one rocket and that were mainly earmarked for use with nuclear warheads. This explains why the German Bundeswehr did not field a multiple launch rocket system in its early years. Only when it began to develop modern domestic weapon systems which included a requirement for a powerful artillery system to engage area targets the LARS 1 could finally be introduced.

Im Waffenarsenal der Bundeswehr des Kalten Krieges spielten taktische Boden-Boden Raketen sowohl mit konventionellen Sprengköpfen als auch mit nuklearer Munition eine wichtige Rolle für die Erfüllung des deutschen Auftrages innerhalb der NATO. In den frühen Jahren wurden modernste Waffensysteme fast durchweg vom amerikanischen Bündnispartner beschafft, was sich im Bereich der Raketenartillerie der Bw in den Systemen Honest John, Sergeant und Lance widerspiegelte. Die U.S. Army besaß damals keine Mehrfachraketenwerfer und konzentrierte sich auf die Entwicklung schwerer Artillerieraketen, die im Einzelschuss verschossen wurden und vorwiegend für den atomaren Einsatz gedacht waren. So hatte die Artillerietruppe der Deutschen Bundeswehr in den Anfangsjahren ihres Bestehens keine Mehrfachraketenwerfer. Diese folgten erst durch die Entwicklung einer leistungsfähigen deutschen Flächenfeuerwaffe in Form des Mehrfachraketenwerfers LARS 1.
