IFOR

Operation Joint Endeavour, the NATO-led deployment of the Implementation FORce (IFOR) in order to end the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina (former Yugoslavia), was the first combat operation of NATO ever. It also was a milestone in the quick change of NATO from an alliance focused mainly on protecting the territorial integrity of its members into an alliance that more and more would be involved in securing and establishing peace in other regions of the world. All states that in 1995-1996 were members of NATO and featured armed forces and the nations of the PfP program as well as other nations assigned troops to IFOR and took part in Joint Endeavour. This publication shows the colourful multinational motor pool of the operation.

Operation „Joint Endeavour", also der von der NATO geführte Einsatz der Implementation FORce (IFOR) zur Beendigung des Konfliktes in Bosnien-Herzegowina (Ex-Jugoslawien), war der erste Kampfeinsatz von NATO-Truppen überhaupt. Er war ein Meilenstein in einer schnell fortschreitenden Wandlung der NATO von einem Verteidigungsbündnis, das auf den Schutz der territorialen Integrität der Bündnismitglieder fokussiert war, hin zu einem weltweit operierenden Bündnis, das sich verstärkt für Sicherheit und Frieden auch in anderen Regionen der Erde einsetzt. The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) operates in Afghanistan since January 2001. The mission of ISAF is to support the new Afghan Government in regaining sovereignty, establishing a secure and safe environment and building functional security forces, as well as to support the economical and political rebuild of the country. Between August and November 1988, NATO conducted a total of 67 larger exercises. The majority of these exercises were conducted on the territory of West Germany, and the greatest troop concentration took place in September 1988. Some 385,000 troops with 2,600 MBTs and 1,160 helicopters trained simultaneously. Among other forces, no less than five corps were fielded. From 19-23 September 1988, the 1st (NL) Corps conducted its last corps-level FTX named Free Lion 88. A total of 44,000 troops took part in the exercise, including soldiers from the Netherlands, from West Germany, from the USA and from the United Kingdom. A total of 12,510 wheeled and 1,700 tracked vehicles (including 420 main battle tanks) as well as 145 helicopters, deployed with the troops. This publication is a pictorial record of the vehicles participating in Free Lion 88 and is supported by comprehensive written background information.

Zwischen August und November 1988 führte die NATO insgesamt 67 größere Übungen durch, die meisten davon fanden auf dem Boden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland statt. Zur größten Truppenkonzentration kam es dabei im September 1988, zeitgleich übten damals etwa 385.000 Soldaten mit 2.600 Kampfpanzern und 1.160 Hubschraubern. Unter anderem befanden sich fünf Korps im Einsatz. Die letzte Korpsgefechtsübung des 1 (NL) Korps war die vom 19. bis 23. September 1988 durchgeführte Übung „Free Lion 88." An Free Lion 88 nahmen rund 44.000 Soldaten aus den Niederlanden, der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, den U.S.A. und Großbritannien mit 12.510 Radfahrzeugen, 1.700 Kettenfahrzeugen (darunter etwa 420 Kampfpanzern) und 145 Hubschraubern teil. Der vorliegende Bildband zeigt die bei Free Lion 88 eingesetzten Militärfahrzeuge und bietet weiterhin umfangreiche schriftliche Hintergrundinformationen.

EJERCITO DE TIERRA
Vehicles of the Modern Spanish Army

As many other NATO armies, the Spanish Army had to deal with a major reorganisation effort after the Warsaw Pact was disbanded and the Cold War had ended, to convert into a modern force capable of international deployment on peace-keeping and humanitarian missions. Under severe budget restrictions most modern combat systems, such as the Leopard 2A6E main battle tank and the Centauro wheeled armoured infantry fighting vehicle, could be fielded. However, the conversion process is not over yet.
This publication shows - despite the restrictive Spanish information policy and scarce photographical documentation - the vehicle pool of the army in Spain itself as well as on the missions abroad. The main focus is given to those vehicles that serve exclusively in the Ejercito De Tierra.

Wie viele andere moderne NATO-Armeen, kämpfte das Spanische Heer nach dem Wegfall der Bedrohung durch den Warschauer Pakt und dem Ende des Kalten Krieges mit einer neuen Zielsetzung, die auf Auslandseinsätze und Friedensmissionen in aller Welt zugeschnitten werden musste. Unter starken Budgetzwängen gelang es, auch unter Beschaffung modernster Waffensysteme wie dem Kampfpanzer Leopard 2A6E und dem Radschützenpanzer Centauro, viele dieser Ziele umzusetzen. Die Umstrukturierung ist aber noch nicht abgeschlossen.
Diese Publikation zeigt, trotz der restriktiven spanischen Informationspolitik und dem dadurch nur begrenzt zugänglichen Informations- und Fotomaterial, den Fuhrpark des Spanischen Heeres im eigenen Land und auf Einsätzen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt hierbei auf jenen Fahrzeugen, die nur in der Ejercito De Tierra zu finden sind.

Vehicles of the Modern Hungarian Army

The Hungarian Army was one of the cornerstones of Warsaw Pact military strategy. As late as 1988, the peacetime strength of personnel in the armed forces reached 106,800 soldiers supported by 1,435 tanks, 2,310 AIFVs/APCs, 1,750 howitzers, 270 anti-tank guns, almost 500 air defence systems, and much more. Today, Hungary is a NATO member, has other tasks such as peacekeeping missions and, as of 2010, the total personnel strength is only 23,000. This publication is on one hand a sentimental journey back to the vast equipment of Warsaw Pact times, on the other hand it allows a closer look onto the current situation with even western vehicles being introduced. Special chapters cover, among others, the BTR-80A wheeled armoured infantry fighting vehicle and the T-72 main battle tank.

Die Ungarische Armee war einer der Eckpfeiler im Militärkonzept des Warschauer Paktes. Noch 1988 hatte sie eine Friedensstärke von 106.800 Mann. Die Kampftruppe umfasste 1.435 Kampfpanzer, 2.310 Schützenpanzer und Mannschaftstransportwagen, 1.750 Haubitzen, 270 Panzerabwehrkanonen, fast 500 Truppenluftabwehrsysteme, und anderes mehr. Heute ist Ungarn ein NATO-Mitglied und hat neue Aufgaben, auch auf Auslandsmissionen, zu erfüllen. Mit Stand 2010 haben die Ungarischen Streitkräfte nur noch eine Personalstärke von 23.000 Mann. Diese Publikation gewährt noch einmal einen sentimentalen Rückblick auf die vielen Waffensysteme vergangener Warschauer Pakt Zeiten, und wirft gleichzeitig einen Blick auf die neueste Ausrüstung, die teilweise sogar aus Deutschland stammt. Besondere Kapitel sind zum Beispiel dem BTR-80A Rad-Schützenpanzer und dem T-72 Kampfpanzer gewidmet.
