RECCE - The Eyes and Ears of 1st (UK) Armoured Division

The Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment carries out long-range, ground-based manned reconnaissance for a larger military formation. The regiment gathers information mainly by armoured reconnaissance, but also by using battlefield surveillance systems such as radar, or ground-based or airborne sensors. Reconnaissance is subdivided into Reconnaissance of Situation, Reconnaissance Objective Area and Poststrike Reconnaissance. This publication aims to give the reader an insight into the concept, organisation, vehicle equipment, daily routines, exercises and missions of Formation Reconnaissance Regiment 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards (QDG) and other reconnaissance assets.

BAOR in REFORGER - Vehicles of the British Army of the Rhine in the REFORGER Exercises 1975-91

Great Britain participated in the American REFORGER exercises as an important NATO ally mainly with units of the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR). Initially only a small number of troops took part, but this increased to a brigade size contingent in 1978. The REFORGER exercises were of special value as they were usually conducted on authentic ground, one of the Warsaw Pact's possible invasion routes to the Rhine valley. Field training exercises (FTX) were always conducted in the open countryside. During the exercises the British Army units were well known for the fact that being tactical was considered being above everything else! This publication shows the vehicles of the BAOR participating in the exercises REFORGER 78 FTX Certain Shield to REFORGER 91 FTX Certain Shield.

Als wichtiger NATO-Verbündeter stellte Großbritannien mit Teilen der British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) größere Verbände zu den amerikanischen REFORGER Manövern ab. Anfänglich noch mit kleineren Einheiten erfolgte 1978 die Beteiligung in Brigadestärke. Der besondere Übungswert für die BAOR war der realistische Schauplatz, die Invasionsroute der Warschauer Pakt Truppen hin zum Rheintal. Die Gefechtsübungen der damaligen Zeit fanden ausnahmslos im freien Gelände statt. Bekannt und berüchtigt waren die britischen Truppen dafür, dass Gefechtsverhalten über alles gestellt wurde!
